Kirkconnel and Kelloholm’s Day of the Region took place on Sunday 11th September. A team from Browns Food Group volunteered at the event providing tasting samples of cooked meat and Wee Willie Winkie sausages within the hall, whilst also supplying Hall’s burgers, sausages and lorne for the community barbecue. Out in the field, the team hosted a haggis hurling competition for both adults and kids, with winners receiving a variety of prizes. Entertainment at the event included a mini Tattoo featuring pipers and majorettes.
Day of the Region encourages grass-roots rural community development and cooperation through a locally devised programme of special events and activities to suit particular communities. Day of the Region is about capturing the very essence of life in the rural communities of this region and encouraging more people to participate in the wide range of activities that go on throughout the year. Dumfries and Galloway was the first place in the UK to host the Day of the Region initiative in October 2011 and celebrations have been held in various communities ever since.
